What are Murry and Knowles doing at Pop's Place?

Riding The Bull  was introduced at a very popular restaurant called Pop's Place on December 12 in Denison, Texas just north of Dallas. During the morning  breakfast rush, people lined up to meet Mickey and ask him about his new book.  It was the first first formal book signing for Mickey Murry. Mickey answered questions and autographed several copies. Of course, people asked is the story about riding a bull? Mickey replied that it is about his life riding the real estate bull.

The book signing event was created by Kirk Knowles of  Kirk Knowles Promotions. He had read the story, was excited and set up the first book signing event.  Knowles is confident he will generate many favorable interviews on TV, Radio, and other book signings.

Mickey Murry said, "I am excited about this promotion because Kirk loves the story and his company is a mover and a shaker among promotional companies." 

The book signing was a stage for the start of a production video for Riding The Bull.

Mickey Murry "Bull Rider."

A slice of Texas history and the American dream told from the perspective of a person who lived it.

Dan Flynn was a part of my ride.  He was the Roger Staubach of Bankers.  Because of him I had dealings with Roger Staubach, Tom Landry, Joe Gibbs and many other well known people.  I became involved in starting a new bank and gained ownership in several others.  I eventually became Chairman of the Board of a bank and that was a very proud moment in my life.

People ask. Why did you write Riding The Bull?

The obvious reason is that it is quite an honor for some to think your story has merit and worth publishing. But that was not my primary reason.

I hoped that my story would inspire and motivate some people that it was possible for someone, like me, with two kids, at age 18, no education, and no family wealth to accomplish great things. 

Anything is possible if are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and to go out of your way to convince others that can help you that you want to be a winner. Success will follow a great effort.  And although some failure or setbacks may follow great success, what you  accomplished will always be there. And what is more important, you can get back at it again and accomplish some more.

This is a great story about the American dream, Texas style. It is not just about the glitz and glamorous side of life, but it is about the genuine pitfalls of someone who is willing to try and accomplish great things.  That is why Riding The Bull is the appropriate title for my story.  Read my story and you will see why the title fits.

Dr. Robert Schuller was one of the fascinating people that lived in my story.

When I thought I had lost everything, I turned on the TV.  

There he was delivering two of his most powerful messages - Tough Times Never Last, Tough People Do and Success is Never Ending, Failure is Never Final.  

Who was he? He was Dr. Robert H. Schuller. His TV show the Hour of Power was watched my millions of people every week. His message was a gift of hope to many people including me.

Dr. Schuller is a person that had an impact on my life, as well as, the lives of millions of others. You can discover how he helped me in my book. He was my savior because his words meant  that all of the great things I had accomplished would always be there and no one could ever take them away. My failure was not final and I could come back.

After thinking about Dr. Schuller's message and believing God had compelled me to turn on the TV on that specific day at that specific time, I was fired up and ready to get back on the bull and hang on. Not only was I determined, but I was feeling very close to God because I knew he was with me.

Does heaven need pools? If they do, the best pool man I know is on the way.

Today, I have a heavy heart.  I found out that one of my favorite people passed away.

His name was Richard Parks and was affectionately called "The Pool Man."  A book should be written about him, and his animated personality that was displayed when he started selling you on his services as a pool builder.

The photo is a picture of Richard Parks and Tracey Lear. The picture  was taken a few summers ago.

He had a gleam in his eye and was so animated you never tired of hearing his sales pitch.  What makes this even sadder, just a few years ago, he found the love of his life with a beautiful widow named Tracey Lear.  They were so happy, and I am going to really miss him. I can tell you there are many interesting characters in Riding The Bull and he was one of my favorites.  I have a feeling there will be some new pools built in Heaven.  Rest in Peace "Pool Man."

Shake a hand, get a customer. Celebrate National Handshake Day.

Today is National Handshake day.  As I explain in my book, a handshake is a simple, but still a powerful tool in personal and business relationships. 

And listening to all the hype on TV, it made me think of how important my theory of the importance of that handshake was to my success. It is also something that I try to teach in my book Riding The Bull. I mention this technique in several chapters of my book.

For many years, "I want to earn the right to be your builder " was printed on all my literature and in all my ads. Also, after spending time with a customer, my favorite technique was to close the deal by giving them a firm and slow handshake while looking them in the eye and saying with conviction, "I want to earn the right to be your builder."  

This technique worked and it created a memorable bond between me and my customers.

It's a blast to own your own jet.

I did not have a jet when I was first married, but I was still in a hurry. The following is taken directly from the book and I can assure that a jet is better than the 57 Ford I had.

"After six weeks of dating, Joy and I decided to sneak off and get married. I was really ready. I had learned the lesson: if a girl wants to marry you, they just don’t give it up. No marriage, no sex. On a Friday, we drove 32 miles north to Hillsboro, had lunch and then got the nerve to go to the courthouse and apply for a marriage license. They practically threw us out because of our age. But someone there told us that they would not make us show any proof of age in Bell County, so we got back in the car. Bell County was over 100 miles away, and we had about an hour and a half to get there before the courthouse closed for the day. I had a brand new 1957 Ford, and we drove over 100 mph, to just make it at the last moment. They asked our age, and we lied and they said nothing. We were married, way too young to make those kinds of decisions."

I was kidnapped by a 7' tall giant.

I was kidnapped.

That's right, I was kidnapped, or man-napped in my case, and it is a part of my story that you will not wish to miss. A large, burly, muscular bad-guy barged into my office, picked me up in the air - no easy task -  and hauled me off to a waiting limousine parked in front of my office in Plano. The rest of the story is hilarious and has a surprise ending, unless you were there. I can tell you I did not think it was funny at the time. The background is I owed a guy a few bucks, but he said I never had to pay him back. I guess he had a change of heart and sent a representative to collect.

Jackie was there in the office and saw it all. She confirms my description of the story, however, her description of the kidnapping event is even more fascinating. She claims the culprit was 7' tall and weighed more than 350 pounds.

Riding the Bull is my story and I have tried to tell it with candor, humility and pride.

It's the life I lived, Texas style.

The corner of the house pictured in the background was the Castle as described in the book. It was the first house built in Willowbend Estates in Plano, Texas before Plano was even on the national map, as it is today.

No job is too small for the president too do.

I was mowing the lots in Brooks Farm, mainly because our septic tank man had brought over a big 50-year-old John Deere tractor and was leaving it there. I had always wanted to run one, so he let me use it to mow. Thirty-five one and two acre lots still needed mowing every two weeks during the summer. If the people that owned them were prospects for a building job, I did it for free. That was part of my “earn the right to be their builder” service. If the lot owners did not seem interested in us, I charged them $25 per acre. It was fun and dirty. When I got done, I would be black from head to toe. People appreciated and respected me for doing it, and it helped us get some business. It proved I really would do anything to earn the right to be their builder.

Even I felt uncomfortable doing that, but so many people toured The Castle that the photo souvenirs were popular items. The papers wrote stories about me and my success. The Ride of a Life

Mickey lived the life of the rich and famous. From private jets to thoroughbred horses, his bull ride, Texas style, continued through the boom and bust of the housing industry. It included the crazy whitewater ride of excess during the savings and loan deregulation and financial debacle of the Reagan ‘80s. He was tossed from the saddle many times. But like a bull rider going for the world championship, won by the rider who hangs on for that magical eight seconds, Mickey got back up on the beast, time and time again.

In a life laced with many stories of great success, he saw greed and failure. He survived a kidnapping and multiple marriages, owned a string of winning horses, and hobnobbed with presidential candidates and a state Governor. He helped many people reach success, and through winning and losing it all, Mickey found peace where no one ever dreamed he would.
